recalling a dream

The air surrounding me is frigid
and the landscape is dead and desolate,
but the sun is perched high up in the sky
radiating heat and life down on me.
The light is diffused by a thin layer
of ubiquitous clouds
that hang above the tall, looming trees out in the distance
in all directions.
I look down at my feet and see a gravel trail
winding up a steep hillside.
My eyes follow the leading trail up the hill
and I see it disappear
up and around the hill through
large dense trees.
On either side of the trail are dead
and dying patches of grass splattered
with isolated patches of snow,
dirty snow
melting in the sun
revealing all the trapped gravel
and trail debris that has accumulated
over time.
I take a deep inhale and feel the cold,
clean air refreshing my nasal passages
and fill in my lungs and make its way deep down
into my belly.
